Today, students received back their Historical Method assignments with feedback and a rubric. Part of learning (maybe the most important aspect) is to learn to carefully, edit, review and reflect on your work.

Students had the period to go through their work, fix any mistakes or accidental omission (for ex: a section left out) and re-submit. It is my plan to re-grade on Wednesday and place updated marks on PowerSchool at that time.

Students will need to:
a) Complete the self-assessment rubric (and pass it back in to me)

I talked with the students about the new condensed schedule. This has been a very hard school year already, and the new schedule makes it harder yet. We have eight more weeks of school to get through and I promised the students that I would do my best to make that time as gentle to everyone as I could make it. My plan is to go outside every science period, even if only for a walk around the school, barring seriously bad weather or the occasional period where an activity might be just too long to allow for the time. They get to pick whether we go at the beginning or the end of the period.

Today they picked the beginning of the period, so we started with a swing around the school in the sunshine. Then students started a group activity to explore some of the properties of light using various lab materials that we will be using further in this new unit.

For our last science period before the winter break, we went outside for an activity applying the scientific method to determine the factors that affect the reaction between Mentos candies and cola soft drinks. This is strictly exclusively curriculum-based, has everything to do with science and absolutely nothing to do with entertaining children in the last few days before the holiday. Of course I would never do any such thing, no sirree not me, I got the memo!
The class showed both experimental enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity. When we came back upstairs students asked a number of insightful questions that led to a critical evaluation of the conclusions of the experiment. In answer to their questions, I also addressed how the solubility of gases is affected by temperature, how the homogeneous solution of carbon dioxide in water is transformed into a heterogeneous mixture when the carbon dioxide bubbles out, and the effect of the sudden increase in gas pressure.

Wishing a happy and safe holiday to all!

Hi everyone, hope you're keeping well.
This is just to say that I will be posting English work to Google Classroom on Mondays/Tuesdays each week. This is the way I intend to proceed while school is suspended unless I am told otherwise. As you know from District communication, this is NOT work that is COMPULSORY and at any rate it CANNOT NEGATIVELY AFFECT A STUDENT'S OVERALL GRADE. If there are future assignments that can raise marks, it will be indicated on Google Classroom. In the meantime, students who would like feedback on their writing or on their understanding of topics addressed can contact me at any time and I will get back to them. (Parents too, needless to say.) Please stay safe and hang in there!
